There are no prizes for guessing who Elon Musk is. From the founder and CEO of three reputed global companies - PayPal, SpaceX and Tesla Motors, the engineer turned innovator has undoubtedly made it to the top.
Was it leaving his home at the tender age of 17, surpassing depression or his incredible business acumen that helped him make it so far? Pursuing his masters in the field of applied physics and materials science at the University of Stanford was surely the first step.
He soon after graduated and started his own IT company, Zip2 with his brother and from there was no looking back there. From a warehouse as his initial home to a global game changer, his recipe to success was endless perseverance in creating value for people.
So, if you think you’re having a bad day or you’re just not there yet… whether it’s your start-up, goals or life in general then, here’s a dose of inspiration from the visionary who is now busy making a business by sending rockets to Mars.
1. Some people don’t like change, but you need to embrace change if the alternative is disaster.
2. When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.
3. I think that’s the single best piece of advice: constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself.
4. Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough.
5. The first step is to establish that something is possible; then probability will occur.
6. Frankly, though, I think most people can learn a lot more than they think they can. They sell themselves short without trying.
7. Persistence is very important. You should not give up unless you are forced to give up.
8. If you’re co-founder or CEO, you have to do all kinds of tasks you might not want to do… If you don’t do your chores, the company won’t succeed… No task is too menial.
9. “Starting and growing a business is as much about the innovation, drive, and determination of the people behind it as the product they sell.”
10. “I’m interested in things that change the world or that affect the future and wondrous, new technology where you see it, and you’re like, ‘Wow, how did that even happen? How is that possible?'”
11. “What makes innovative thinking happen?… I think it’s really a mindset. You have to decide.”
12. “People should pursue what they’re passionate about. That will make them happier than pretty much anything else.”
13. “As much as possible, avoid hiring MBAs. MBA programs don’t teach people how to create companies.”
14. “It’s very important to like the people you work with, otherwise life [and] your job is gonna be quite miserable.”
15. “If something has to be designed and invented, and you have to figure out how to ensure that the value of the thing you create is greater than the cost of the inputs, then that is probably my core skill.”
